  1. Rebuild, Validate and Mark
  2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  3. If you ever have doubts regarding the integrity of your message 
  4. base, then running one of these utilities can either put your 
  5. mind at rest or correct any problems.
  6.  
  7. These routines are quite fast. Counters Validation without
  8. Marking (see below) is the fastest because it doesn't write to
  9. any message or index files - it merely checks that what you have
  10. makes sense and corrects Power-QWK's Pointers and Counters when
  11. necessary.

  13. Counters Validation checks (and corrects if necessary) the 
  14. current values of the following counters and pointers in each 
  15. existent conference in the current message base: Oldest Unread
  16. Message Pointer, Number of Unread Messages. 
  17.  
  18. Sometimes, Counters Validation will 'correct' the Oldest Unread
  19. Message Pointer when it isn't actually wrong but merely out of
  20. date. This causes the generation of a message of the form
  21.  
  22.           Oldest Unread changed from x to y
  23.  
  24. where x is less than y. This is always acceptable and never
  25. indicative of a fault.
  26.  
  27. It also checks the format of each Message Index entry. If errors 
  28. are found, the Index is truncated to exclude the invalid entries 
  29. and a message is displayed recommending that a full Rebuild be 
  30. run. This message should not be ignored.

  32. 'Mark read' and 'Mark unread' are variations of Counters
  33. Validation in which, whilst the Validation is being performed,
  34. all messages are simultaneously marked as 'Read' or 'Unread'
  35. (whether you have in fact read them or not).

  37. Rebuild resets all pointers and counters to zero and then uses 
  38. the contents of each conference message file in turn to re-create 
  39. its associated Index and reset all its counters and pointers to 
  40. the correct values. The efficacy of a Rebuild can be confirmed by 
  41. a succeeding run of Counters Validation.

  43. Rebuild leaves all messages marked as 'unread'.
  44.  
  45. Bulletins Rebuild unsets all Bulletins Flags and then resets those
  46. for which bulletin files actually exist. A side-effect of Bulletins
  47. Rebuild is that all bulletins, in all conferences, become marked as
  48. 'unread'.
  49.  
  50. You should never have to run Bulletins Rebuild - although it can do
  51. no harm to do so. It is only necessary if UNREAD bulletin files are
  52. deleted other than within Power-QWK, for example, at the DOS command
  53. line or as the result of a disc fault.

  55. This facility is provided as a fail-safe mechanism - you should
  56. nonetheless avoid the deletion of ANY Power-QWK file other than by
  57. facilities provided within Power-QWK.
